03/27/12, 8:22 PM: During the setup for the Turn-Based Tuesday stream, Joe brought me to the realization that turn-based streaming would be really boring. So new plan: Terribad Tuesday. Joe picks a really bad game and I'm forced to stream it (or vice-versa). We do it for the lulz. 03/27/12, 10:53 AM: Okay, we actually did a pretty decent amount of stuff without me updating about it before and during the weekend. I just couldn't be bothered to turn on the desktop and make a newspost until today, given that a lot of what we've been working on has actually been either on Joe's end or on my laptop. First of all, Joe surprised me the very day after we got the blogs all set up (his has a name now, by the way) by giving them a total makeover and generally setting everything up that I needed to start posting those reviews. I haven't actually put any up yet because work (and yesterday, sleep) kept me too occupied to write up a decent one, but picking and reviewing a game is on the agenda for today so hopefully the review will be up on Save Data by (at the latest) tomorrow. Second, LimeGreenNetwork forums are up! I haven't put much infrastructure in as of yet, but for the most part they're usable, and a few catagories have been set up and are ready for posting. The last thing bothering me about them is the fact that I can't seem to get rid of the stupid postcount-determined titles (so an administrator with four posts is stamped with "newbie" under their avatar). That's frankly pretty low on the list of "things that must be fixed before we can get off the ground," though. Starting on Sunday, we've been holding to the new Dusty Cartridges weekly schedule, with Joe streaming Monkey Island 2 for Silly Sunday and the two of us joining via voice chat to stream a couple hours of a 1v1 Sins of a Solar Empire match yesterday for Multiplayer Monday. Today (probably within a couple hours) I'll be streaming Fire Emblem for Turn-Based Tuesday, unless a different game pops into my head before then. Another note: Joe already got his Mists of Pandaria beta invite, and as soon as I get mine, we'll be putting up a new section under the World of Warcraft header for beta coverage, probably involving the use of our new YouTube channel (which I haven't linked yet only because there's absolutely nothing to see there yet). And finally (wow, maybe we've been working on more than I realized), I'm currently designing an official logo for LimeGreenNetwork as a whole. As soon as I have an MS Paint sketch that I'm totally happy with I'll be passing it to Joe so that he can work his graphical wizardry on it. I have to say, making progress on this place sure got a lot easier after I stopped stubbornly insisting that I learn how to perform every single thing by myself. In the meantime, I've put up the links that needed to be put up in the sidebar. It feels weird to have the forum link not under a header like every other link, but I honestly can't think how it should be categorized. 03/21/12, 11:05 AM: After spending the majority of yesterday doing some hardcore fiddling with everything from PHP to FTP and god knows what else, as well as massive guidance and direct aid from Joe, I've got a new and very important section up: blogs. At the moment, you will see one link and one future link under the Blogs heading on the sidebar. The currently active one, Save Data, will lead you to what is currently a completely new, unedited Wordpress blog page. In the near future this is going to be my video game review blog. As opposed to blogging in it daily, I will simply write up a detailed, full-fledged review of whatever I'm currently playing. The inactive link is a placeholder name for what is going to become Joe's anime review blog. Basically, we just got these to exist, and once we've had adequate time to set them up (especially after the weekend when I have a few days off work) we'll start posting and bringing some regular content to the site. This will be in tandem with regular streaming in accordance with the new alliterative weekly schedule. What made these tricky to create was that we didn't just make Wordpress blogs and link to them, but actually installed Wordpress on the LimeGreenNetwork domain itself (meaning that the address is LimeGreenNetwork.com/blogs/[blogname] as opposed to being a Wordpress address). In addition to the two we currently have, I'll be using the system that we established to make at least one more (the daily commentary-style personal blog alluded to in the To-Do List). I'll be making updates on the structural progress of the blogs here in the newsbox, just like every other part of the site. 03/17/12, 2:53 PM: Two and a half hours of work later, the front page doesn't look too different but the subsites (in particular the guild page) have seen a ton of progress. First, the stream schedule (which was previously formatted kind of like a TV guide) has been eliminated as a separate webpage and now exists beneath the embedded stream on the Dusty Cartridges page. The new format, instead of having precise times and dates for specific streams, follows a "flavor of the day" theme. For example, we might stream League of Legends on Multiplayer Monday or Terraria on Worldbuilding Wednesday. Besides that, a large amount of structural work went into the Harbingers of Noxus guild page. Instead of a bunch of goofy placeholder text, the site now has some actual content and a much more solid framework. It now contains its own newsbox (which will be limited to guild news as opposed to site work), as well as a mission statement, some bios for guild officers, an application template (with e-mail links), and a space for what will eventually become a formatted screenshot gallery. More to come later, but for now it's break time. 03/17/12, 12:16 PM: I'm bad at not letting vacations throw me off in the long term. Currently working in concert with Joe for massive meeting of goals, will update again soon. (For reals this time) 11/16/11, 3:34 PM: Another semi-functional page has been made public - a very crude programming schedule template for Dusty Cartridges. Currently the only thing actually listed is the next episode of Oblivion, scheduled to be streamed by me between 6:00 and 7:00 PM tonight (an accurate claim? I hope so). Once I've made sure that the colors used in the schedule layout aren't too eye-bending and found a way to size it more appropriately, I'll try to start filling it out with other stream dates and times. In addition, I've updated the League of Legends patch note review page with the highlights from yesterday's patch. Later (perhaps tonight) I'm going to write up highlights for all of the patches that came between the current one and the original patch reviewed on the page. The other thing that I've been working on for the past couple days has been the Dusty Cartridges recording archives. To be specific, I've experimented with uploading .MP4 files of past recordings directly to LGN. So far my efforts have been halfway successful: the uploading process appears to have gone off without a hitch, but I'm having trouble figuring out what to actually do with them once they're on the site. I've tried modifying the Livestream embed code to play the uploaded videos, but so far no luck. Hopefully I'll make some headway on that soon, because once I have the process for embedding self-hosted videos down, creating the full archives will actually be fairly simple, and that's another giant project I'd be able to cross off on the to-do list. Speaking of the to-do list, another tiny change I've made is how I highlight the items on the list. Projects-in-progress are in green, as they have been, but the text coloring is now on a per-phrase basis, instead of fully coloring any line that has anything I've started on. Once some of these items start reaching full completion, I'll mark them with strike lines. 11/14/11, 6:50 PM: Behold! A table, with cells! The reworking of LGN's standard layout into a tables & cells format is basically complete. The sidebar on the left contains something that I've wanted to be doing since pretty much day one - dummy lines for sections of the site that have yet to be created. As work continues, those lines will be turned into actual hyperlinks to the pages in question. For now, there are links to the three current in-progress pages on the site: the Dusty Cartridges livestream, the League of Legends patch note review page (which I will try to update with the next full patch note release, and stay current with thereafter), and the Harbingers of Noxus guild page. The table setup has been implemented on the Harbingers page and the League page already, but the Dusty Cartridges page is (once again) giving me issues with centering and cellsharing in various browsers, so until I'm able to figure that out I'm leaving it as-is. 11/14/11, 2:29 PM: I've come to an interesting crossroad in my design plans for the site as a whole. On the one hand, I finally managed to salvage the sidebar frame code from the original LGN front page - something that I've been trying to do for quite some time, if previous newsposts haven't made that clear. On the other hand, it turns out that the code and the boxes just don't work that well with the code that I've created the rest of the site with. For instance, on the Harbingers of Noxus page, trying to put a sidebar in the upper left containing the header and logo results in the small black box with the Armory link somehow sliding behind the image and stretching bizzarrely. In addition, most of the pages I've tested the frames with don't maintain positioning when the size of the browser window is altered, which results in some unwanted overlaps. What I'm considering now is a complete rework, where I redesign each page to use tables. The tricky thing will be getting content such as the Dusty Cartridges page, which I only recently was able to get to appear the way I wanted it to, to fit into a table while still maintaining its spacing, alignment, and so forth. So that's what I'm working on right now - learning how to correctly use the table tool and experimenting with the placement of various types of content and design elements. If all goes well, the site will look significantly different by the end of the night! 11/08/11, 7:27 PM: More small updates - first of all, Joe identified an issue with my coding fix to the Dusty Cartridges page in that it wasn't displaying properly in newer browsers. After some thought and tinkering, he devised me a solution utilizing a completely new string of code, which I've since implemented. As far as we're able to tell, the page and embeds should display correctly in all browsers now. In addition, the placeholder image on the Harbingers of Noxus page has been replaced by a high-resolution image of our guild crest, again courtesy of Joe. Still much more to do there - we're talking about setting up guild forums, probably using the old self-hosted LGN forums as a template. Lastly, in a small but convenient fix, I'm placing hyperlinks to the various pages-in-progress around the site directly into the to-do list above the newsbox so that you will no longer need to scroll through my newsposts to navigate around the site. 11/08/11, 12:54 PM: Well, that's one major breakthrough - at last, I've found the correct HTML tag for lining up frames next to one another. As a result, the embedded Dusty Cartridges stream and chat box are now within a single shared border, side-by-side. Huzzah! This will also be incredibly helpful in the further construction of the Harbingers of Noxus guild page (which is still very much a work in progress at the moment). I'm taking a lunch break and then resuming my tinkering. More bite-sized newsposts to come. 11/08/11, 10:40 AM: I allowed this page to lie dormant for a full two months. The why and how are not important at this point; bottom line is that this is something that I never should have allowed to happen. I'm finally getting back in the saddle, as it were, and kicking things into high gear. Today I expect to complete most of the construction on the Harbingers of Noxus page that was planned pre-hiatus. That starts as of the end of this post, and more updates will be written over the course of the day as work on the site continues. 9/07/11, 2:47 PM: While performing some housekeeping over at the Dusty Cartridges Livestream page, Joe discovered that there actually is an embed option for the live chat. So after a small amount of fiddling I've put that onto the page as well. It's current position (below the video stream) is a little inconvenient, but once I get a few more things figured out I can get to work on improving the layout. My sidebar idea has been held up for the same reason - I simply don't know how to put two separate frames alongside one another. I'll have to go examine some of the HTML code on the old LGN pages (which I did save) that had that design element and see if I can figure out how to replicate it. In the meantime, I can at least add some more small content pages. A page for my World of Warcraft guild, Harbingers of Noxus, is the first thing that comes to mind, as it would be simple to do and also open up a new category of content. A simple links page would also be easy to create (see #5 on the to-do list). There are still plenty of stumbling blocks in my way, but they're getting easier and easier to vault over... 8/31/11, 1:09 PM: The Dusty Cartridges page is coming along nicely. The embedding process for the video stream was astonishingly easy. In addition, I can finally start slapping some logos down, as I already had a banner pre-created for Dusty Cartridges (normally seen on its Livestream page). I'm not sure what else to add to the page at this point, unless there's a way to embed the live chat window into the page as well, which I doubt. Once we get into the habit of streaming regular content again, I will definitely be putting up a show schedule to indicate who will be streaming what and when, hopefully a day or two in advance. I do have one major goal for the page, though - depending on the bandwidth requirements, I may be able to host old Dusty Cartridges recordings on LGN. If that's the case, I can set up an archive and organize it all nice and neat. Maybe even make it searchable, once we have enough content to warrant it! Now that I have more than one content page to work with, my next task is to set up a sidebar for this front page indexing links to other pages on the site. I'll probably just make a list of future pages and then turn them into hyperlinks once the pages in question have been created. As a final sidenote, I pinpointed the string of HTML code on this page that was making my hyperlinks "pop" when you hovered the cursor over them and eliminated it. 8/28/11, 8:07 PM: Well, I finally figured out how to create colored borders and backgrounds on text boxes, as you may have noticed. I'm also testing out a new font on Augusta's advice. I'm toying about with various "looks" for the site, but if anything catches your eye as particularly attractive (or garish), drop me a line. I gave up on the parchment texture background for the League of Legends test page (linked in the newspost below) for the moment. No combination of colors for the text frame looked good with it and without a frame on the text it just looked like I picked up a page out of Geocities circa 1995. Of course, I may be flattering myself to assume it doesn't still look that way now. The next thing I plan on attempting is embedding the Dusty Cartridges stream on a separate page, now that I have the utmost basics of page design mostly down. We'll see how badly that manages to backfire on me. 8/24/11, 10:02 PM: Work on the site is currently going slowly as a direct result of the fact that I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I'm using a more advanced site editing software than what I managed the LGN with back in its glory days, and I'm still stumbling my way around simple tasks such as semi-transparent text boxes and creating cells. It doesn't help that my HTML coding skill is utterly nonexistent. Nevertheless, I've cobbled together my first piece of actual content - a brief review of today's patch notes for League of Legends. I'm still toying with various aesthetic styles for each part of the site, and what you'll see on that page is very much a work in progress. Feel free to let me know if you have any critiques or ideas to share with me via either Facebook or my e-mail, greg.jeffer@gmail.com (speaking of e-mail, I should set up a site-specific account - more on that when it happens). I'm considering looking into some outside help as far as learning the ins and outs of the editing software. Once I get a more solid grasp on that I should be able to move forward with the rest of the site much more quickly - currently I have a ton of great ideas for layout and design and no idea how to actually implement any of them. 8/22/11, 7:42 PM: I have returned. And I have wiped the slate clean. My name is Greg T. Jeffer, formerly known on this website by my online name "Lemming." LimeGreenNetwork, which my father helped me to start as an outlet for my writing and my love of video games, was first put online shortly after I turned 13 years old. I wrote some amateur video game guides and put up some screenshot galleries, and LGN quickly became an online hang-out spot for me and my friends. We had some great get-togethers centered around my little community, and many, many conversations on the meticulously-kept forums. I am now 22, and I have not updated LimeGreenNetwork in five years. I graduated in spring of last year from Rowan University with my bachelor's degree in journalism. Rather than immediately begin my career, I elected to pursue another goal first, and moved out of my family's home in New Jersey to live in an apartment in Ohio with my fiance, Augusta Anderson. Since then, I've been paying the bills and living comfortably working an hourly position in customer service. But I completed an education in communications for a reason - since graduation, I've been itching to write. It's time I started again. Which brings me back here, to this old website. LGN was my first-inhabited corner of the internet when I was young, and I think it's only appropriate that it's where I return to as I begin to develop a professional web presence. LimeGreenNetwork might become an internet empire... or it might just be another link in my rsum. Only time will tell. My immediate post-renovation goals can be seen above; long-term, I want to make this a resource hub for the online gaming community. In addition to guides, galleries, and tools, I'll be providing a centralized location for news and first impressions on a variety of companies, franchises and titles in the video game industry. I don't know how long it will be until LGN is fully functional again, but for now I intend to do at least some work on it each day, even if it's just writing one paragraph on one page. That starts here, and I can't wait to see where it ends. Wish me luck! |
